Recidivism rates in Maine are a staggering 78%. The Liberation Institute seeks to address this problem by offering inmates a yoga teacher training, recovery workshop, and educational curriculum at the Maine State Prison. We graduated Our first cohort on October 24, 2017. Again and again, the Warden and prison staff have commented on the positive impact yoga has made on our students’ stress level, outlook, and interpersonal skills.

Most of the 2.5 million people incarcerated in the United States will one day be released. In addition to housing and employment, these men and women need to be embraced by a supportive and welcoming community. We hope that the Liberation Institute can provide such fellowship. Our recent graduates are, in many respects, unrecognizable from the men we first met Two years ago. We ran on a volunteer basis our first year. Now we are looking to raise funds to develop our program and begin to lay the groundwork for a robust array of re-entry services.

About Us

Located on the beautiful coast of Maine.

Located on the beautiful coast of Maine.

It all started when…

three people sat down and brainstormed about how they could positively impact the lives of at-risk individuals. After several failed attempts, they finally launched the Liberation Institute in 2014. The Liberation Institute is a 501c3 that offers education, wellness, and recovery services to under served populations in northern New England and beyond.

Co-founders Kevin Martin, Jessica Kaniuka, and Piers Kaniuka began programming in the Maine State Prison in the fall of 2016. Each of them brought a unique skill set to the project. Jessica is a seasoned yoga instructor who has facilitated several yoga teacher trainings, Piers has extensive experience working with those suffering from alcoholism and addiction, and Kevin (who was once incarcerated himself) is studying human rights and advocacy. In October 2017 the Liberation Institute graduated its first cohort of nationally accredited yoga teachers at the 200 hour level. These graduates are now teaching yoga throughout the facility.

Cohort II GRADUATION will take place on july 31, 2019. Cohort I graduates ARE CURRENTLY workING towards THEIR 500 hour certification.
